Greening public services

The public sector accounts for approximately 8 percent of the UK’s total carbon emissions. In order for us to meet the Climate Change Act 2008 target of an 80 percent reduction by 2050 we must support public services to reduce their carbon emissions. We delivered a programme that did just this by supporting seven high potential innovations from the community and voluntary sector.

We selected the most innovative ventures from around the UK. Not only did they save carbon but many of them saved cash, and delivered added benefit for their communities. Like AfRecycle, who saved the NHS almost half a million pounds last year by diverting 72 tonnes of re-usable medical waste from landfill, skilling up the long term unemployed in the process.

Social ventures such as these often have a lack of secure income and weak relationships with commissioners and funders of public services. They can find it hard to secure funding that enables sustained innovation and therefore can fail to reach their potential.

We provided expert support to these social ventures, helping them to overcome these challenges. Each had different development needs so we tailored the support accordingly. We also work directly with commissioners, social investors and policy-makers to enable them to achieve their objectives. This included connecting them to local government and health commissioners to support their work to scale.
